The Troy Record and The Saratogian, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking a Sports Reporter to join the team! We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with the ability to travel and report on a wide variety of stories, proficient in multimedia and the use of social media. Responsibilities include covering, photographing, live tweeting, and video at a variety of live sporting events; preparing photos to accompany feature articles; posting/preparing score results for online and print; interviewing coaches and athletes to enrich content; assisting in preparation of weekly schedule; constructing local roundup/agate; using social media to engage the audience; focusing primarily on high school teams, Tri-City ValleyCats, and local college athletes; sending pages on deadline; proofreading and editing contributor submissions/press releases; and final approval of print pages for the sports section twice weekly. Requirements include a Bachelor’s or Associate's degree (or comparable experience) in journalism or related field, experience in photography and willingness to experiment with new storytelling tools and social media approaches, strong writing skills across a variety of story types, a reader-first mindset, some experience in copy editing, and curiosity. Conditions of employment include a full pre-employment background check and MVR, possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, willingness to travel occasionally for work assignments, training sessions, and/or in-person meetings, and availability for shift work including various hours outside of normal business hours.
